January update....

Well January is more than half over and time is flying by. Just thought I would upload a few photos and update everyone on Matteo's progress. He is a busy little boy, still loves books, still crawls, is trying to stand whenever he can, though not on his own .Tonight I put up the jolly jumper (Thank you S & W) and did he have fun. I will try to post a video of him having a blast.

He sort of has a routine but some days are off. Over the weekend he had a slight fever as I think he is teething. Lots of drool, red cheeks, but no other teeth have sprouted yet. He still loves the carriage and the car, and loves going out shopping or visiting. He loves his play area and is playing with more of his toys, and especially is playing with his musical activity set...so that is great.....He still screams when he doesn't get his way, and doesn't sleep much during the day, but does put in a full night sleep, most of the time, with a few wake up moments, but quickly goes back to sleep. There is still the occasional yelling episode where I'm not sure what is going on and what is wrong.... He sometimes works himself up quite a bit and it takes a bit to calm him down. Yet I am getting better at knowing when he is overwhelmed etc...so try to stop it from getting really bad/ Sometimes it happens quite quickly and the screaming is hard to take, and I do not handle it well all of the time...it scares, me, scares the cats too...and I'm sure scares Matteo as he is totally frustrated at not being able to communicate what he wants.

For the most part however the relationship with the cats is going very very well...they are all becoming fast friends and they let Matteo grab them and touch them and he lets them sniff him....He really enjoys them, and for him they are there for him to play with, just as I am there to take care of all his needs when he needs them....

...As for me, well last week I started teaching my one graduate course. As this adoption journey was uncertain I had requested to teach this winter term, thinking that I would be in Vietnam over the summer and then off in the fall. While I wasn't sure I would go ahead with it, decided that Matteo was doing well and we were both adjusting and it would be valuable for my career path as it is the first graduate course I've taught...Additionally my nephew who is living with me is the one who is here with Matteo on the evening I'm away. I feed him his supper and D. plays with Matteo and gives him his bottle and puts him to sleep. He is usually asleep for most of my time away and I'm so glad he has some male company which is good for Matteo. I'm home in time for the final bottle of the evening. I have 13 students and most of the work for the course was already prepped in the fall, so it is my night out. I have found thus far, (only two classes) that I feel re-energized after having a stimulating evening of adult discussion. The break is doing me good, because it is really hard at times caring for Matteo and I feel run down not so much because it is hard but because it is so repetitious. While it is stressful getting myself ready and out the door....something I will have to get used to eventually...but great that Matteo has his cousin to care for him. Additionally one afternoon a week I head off to my office hours and have found a great student whose family I know, to babysit with Matteo....so that is great. She has lots of baby experience and comes to my home as well. During my time away, I try to do most of my prep for the following class, so again, a very good break too. The rest of the time it is just me and Matteo.

Sometimes the days feel very long depending on how Matteo is doing, other days we have lots of smiling and lots of fun and those days seem to go fast. He really does love to laugh and I enjoy finding and doing different things to make him laugh. He is starting to laugh from down in his belly and that is so sweet to see and hear.

I think our relationship is going well and I continue to learn about him, and to learn about myself and the kind of mother I am becoming. While I loved the holidays I did not really enjoy that we were dealing with them, jetlag, returning to Canada, a major change, all at once....It has been nice to get into a more "normal" routine beyond the holidays, and though I am not looking forward or wishing that Matteo gets bigger, I am looking forward to the spring. He's going to love getting out more and visiting various parks. All those parks that S. has been posting photos of in our neighbourhood. I am craving the warmth of spring. .I think the warmth of Vietnam imprinted itself on me, such that I feel cold all the time, more than usual, so all in all, January's routine is starting to feel very nice and motherhood and my little boy continue to become more and more real each day.

Citizenship documents arrive and Matteo is able to sit on his own...

An important few days! As of a couple of days ago, Matteo can now sit on his own...he tips over occasionally but he is able to sit and play. He can't move from his belly to sitting yet, but can move from sitting to his belly and to crawling...and of course, my niece Madeline is teaching Matteo to stand on his own....He is standing quite a bit in the exercauser, usually doesn't sit anymore and his legs are getting very strong, so hopefully he will be standing and maybe walking in the near future!!...

Also today in the mail I received Matteo's Canadian Citizenship card and his Citizenship certificate...of course they are both in his Vietnamese name and I will have to request a change once I legally change the name, but it was exciting to get these documents. I mailed off the forms on Dec. 10, and I guess it took exactly a month to get the documents, so that was great....

And finally today I booked Matteo's baptism.....will have to confirm with everyone if the date works, but otherwise can now start planning for that marker in his spiritual life.....all and all a very good few days....

published post on one month anniversary of G&R

Well I finally figured out how to upload a video so have been able to update and post an old blog...I have added a few photos of Matteo being washed for the Giving and Receiving ceremony and a video of him being dressed in his duckie outfit...you can hear him screaming. There's also a photo that Mario took of us leaving the orphanage for the last time....you can probably tell I'm crying.....I got really emotional as I was taking Matteo with me and was so glad he was no longer one of many being cared for by a few.....I found these moments much more emotionally charged than the signing that took place a few hours later...to see the video and photos click here One Month G&R Anniversary post

Elmo Reading Chair...

This afternoon Matteo sat in his Elmo chair for the first time. He didn't do any reading today but I sure hope it inspires him to do lots and lots of it when he does learn how to read....

First Doctor's visit and first vaccine ...

well Matteo has come through these firsts rather well, though I think it might have been harder on me than on him....I feel exhausted and am not sure why.......I got to distract him while the doctor gave him the needle and it was as much for me as for him, so I wouldn't see the needle either....this afternoon he did seem a bit more irritated and perhaps had a slight fever but the preventive dose of tylenol got him through.......so Matteo is now on track to receive the many vaccines that he'll need for a healthy life.....

7 Month Birthday photos

Okay so Matteo might not understand that you don't eat the candles, but he does understand that you're supposed to eat at a birthday...I didn't give him much of a chance as the "cake" was still in the box and the candles were all that he could get at...

Happy Belated 7 month Birthday Matteo!!...Happy New Year, Felice Anno Nuovo, Chúc mừng năm mới

Well we, or should I say, I've been so busy taking care of Matteo, the cats, myself and the house that I forgot Matteo's 7 month birthday December 30.....I remembered it a few days before and made sure to have candles etc...but with all the celebrating going on, and visiting, I totally forgot until the day after....so I will definitely have to make it up to Matteo as up to his one year birthday I definitely want to continue the monthly celebrations!....so pictures to follow....

The holidays have come and gone and while I am still dealing with jet lag I'm sure and so is Matteo, we have done a lot of visiting and a lot of spending time just the two of us....I am looking forward to the days ahead as life will get into a different rhythm, with just the two of us....not to say we still won't be visiting or having visitors over....Anyhow yesterday was a great first day of the year and I implemented our new family tradition....I have wanted to celebrate the first day of the year by having a drop in day for friends and family. This year I extended the invite to families who have or are waiting to adopt and while it was short notice I did have 5 families drop by...It was great to have the house full of people though it was challenging trying to get ready for it while caring for Matteo....but it was nice....next year hope to do it again and perhaps extend the invite to more people and have the drop in throughout the day....we'll see if we can manage that...but I heard about this idea from a friend years ago who said her parents had always had a sort of open house on New Year's day from breakfast to dinner and after, over the years the friends, families, work colleagues expanded...some dropping in for an hour, for a coffee and a cookie, others for a few for more visiting, and still others stay for most of the day....I really liked the idea as I always felt the first of the year was a special day but could also be a difficult day so why not share it with those who you care about....so thank you so much to those families who dropped by...I had planned to take some pictures and made sure my battery was charged...and then was doing so much socializing that I totally forgot the pictures!!(see some pictures here)...anyhow one parent did take some pictures so that was good and will try to post those when I get them...for now Happy New Year to everyone who has been reading my blog, and especially to those still waiting for children, I pray that this year will be your year to be united with them.

Happy New Year, Felice Anno Nuovo, Chúc mừng năm mới
